Judith Woodings
A/P Variation Edition Unframed Stone Lithograph
Trees and woodland, bent and formed by weather and reflected in still pools, landscapes flooded in evening light. These are the themes of Judith’s current work.
Her images explore the unusual process of Mokulito wood lithography and allow for prints that combine painterly marks with the qualities of woodcut.
Trees frequently feature in her work; depicted as romantic images, weather - worn by the elements or as sentinels for man’s disregard for the environment. ‘The Flooded Tree’ series are of a flood plain that has been built upon, upsetting the environmental balance and causing the land to flood every winter.
In 2017 she took part in a residency at the Artists’ Print Residence, Arenys de Munt, Barcelona where she was taught Mokulito printing by Ewa Budka.
Mokulito now forms the basis of Judith’s printmaking practice and research. First developed in Japan in the 1970’s by Professor Seishi Ozuka, the block can be painted with gestural marks made with brushes or drawn with bamboo or nib pens. Uniquely the block can also be carved with woodcutting tools, so the resulting image can be printed with both painterly and woodcut marks from the same plate.
